The Meteorological Agency puts out a Tsunami forecast after an earthquake hits, before the Tsunami arrives in the areas affected.
The Meteorological Agency announces whether or not a Tsunami will hit an area, and the expected magnitude of the Tsunami. The Tsunami forecast is relayed to disaster prevention related organizations, the mass media and local meteorological agencies, and via them to the local public.
Coastal Breakwater Management
In order to protect the homes, businesses and residents of the coastal areas from tsunami, sea walls, sea gates and breakwaters are operated as Marine Protection Facilities Management Projects.
Consistent Tsunami Warnings
In the wake of the 1983 Central Japan Sea Earthquake in June of 1983, a Tsunami Warning Related Ministries Steering Committee was established by the Prime Minister's Office, the National Police Agency, the National Land Agency, the Marine Safety Agency, the Meteorological Agency, the Ministry of Telecommunication and the Fire Defence Agency. In July, a plan for consistent tsunami warnings in coastal areas was decided. The plan was confirmed in November of 1993 after the Hokkaido Nansei-Oki Earthquake.
